Fuel grade in A6 4.2

Not sure if this is true for a 4.2, but I took my passat 2.8 into my local
independent audi/vw mechanic because it was running poorly and even dying.
They said it had carbon buildup in the head due to not using premium (I had
been using plus) I was skeptical at first, but they cleaned out the carbon
and it ran like a champ, they told me to only use premium.  Now that is all
I use in all of my cars, since they all call for it.  Wouldn't use it if
they didn't

A friend and coworker of mine just got an A6 with the 4.2 engine. It is a
2000 model year. It calls for 91 octane. If he is willing to be a little
down on power can he use 89 mid grade? I seem to recall that it will just
retard timing. Is this correct?
