Fuel grade in A6 4.2

Here in Colorado at 6000+ feet in elevation, mid grade is 87, with 91 being
the "premium" grade. I use mid/87 from time to time and haven't noticed any
difference, though my evaluation has gone no further than seat-of-the-pants.

Yes, you can use it. I'd advise against low octane under high load (long
hill climbs, full throttle, etc.) conditions. Sometimes hot summertime
seems to be less forgiving to lower octane. It can't be air density, so it
must be higher cylinder temperatures.
Even with toptier, I still recommend using a bottle of straight techron
every 5000 miles. More frequently if not using toptier gas.
The A6 4.2 is not a car for the weak in wallet. Maintenance delayed will
destroy the can. It's important to keep up with it.
Had Audi not screwed my family on an A8 problem, my mother would've
purchased an A6 4.2 instead of a BMW. Oh well, Audi lost out because they
not only lost a lot of sales by lying to me, they also had to buy the A8
back.
It's important when using a lower octane to understand WHY the octane is
required. With that knowledge, you can go lower. I do this on my Escalade.
I use 91-93 octane when towing or expecting high loads. Otherwise, for daily
driving I use 89.
