A new type of front suspension ?

That's true, I don't pay as much attention to rally racing as other forms as
well. You could argue similar things about baja racing trucks, but that
doesn't make their suspensions optimal in any way.

But you're right, aside from being cheap to produce, they are also lighter
due to having less parts, and needing lighter subframes since you have less
points to reinforce. And they are likely more durable for the same reason.

When it comes to purpose built racecars that run on prepped dry black top,
though, you are likely to find that an overwhelming majority will use a
double wishbone setup or some type of interesting multilink (depends on what
the race cars cost ) putting the wheel to the ground because of how much
liberty it allows the designer and user to adjust and tune the suspension
for maximum grip.

There is no doubt that Subaru has had quite a prolific Rally program for
many years, and they do use this setup in production and race setup. The
McPherson strut, that is.
