My former totally stock '88 90 q locked itself in the above manner.
Fortunately, the trunk was open, so a hole in the ski bag and broom stick
with a wire loop in the end helped to unlock.
When I leave the car, the key leaves in my hand.
And re: remotes - they fail in various ways:
My '99 bug can be locked only with the key, the remote only arms the alarm,
not the door locks.
My Y2K bug's key locks only the driver's door and that's it; the remote
works OK - locks all doors and arms the alarm.
Both have trunk keyholes, thank god.
