Interesting perspective, thanks Tony!
I too am contemplating the addition of a TDI to the stable. One other
parameter for me is the smog check situation. I an extremely leery of
buying any gasoline powered car newer than say 1974 these days.

Timing belt job is a bit $$, and quite honestly if you aren't driving a lot
of miles (probably in the 20K+ range) a TDI has a hard time paying for
itself on just fuel savings. THey are more $$ to buy than a comparable 2.0,
more $$ in maint.
If you want low maintenance and good fuel economy, a Corolla is honestly
hard to beat <ducks>
On the A6's, you know what to look for on teh 2.8's. Similar on the 3.0's,
but no camchain tensioners to leak. However, they do have head gasket
issues on occasion. Also, other oil leaks. But, what VAG engine doesn't?
