Valve Comer Gasket Installation

Taking off the old valve cover gasket and the half-circle rubber piece at
rear I noticed no glue or gasket goop or silicone around the old rubber
gasket. At the front of gasket I noticed a thin reddish rubbery strip coming
off, not very much. Should I put silicone black goop on both sides of new
gasket? 

 

Noticed no sludge build-up around camshaft. A somewhat reddish-browny colour
on surface of camshaft and hold-downs and upper surface of cylinder head.
Inside surface of valve cover is clean. I changed out the rubber ring of the
oil filler cap. The old rubber gasket of oil filler cap just broke away.

 

Patient: 1986 type 44 turbo quattro, 318,000km
