Laye weigh-in on the 1.8s.
Actually a great motor - that they pushed the oil interval too long on. Early models were 7500 or 10k - not good for a small sump, 4-cy turbo.
Just change frequently with good oil that has a high flash point and be well. of course, if the PO sludged it, it may require more drastic action.
But one can;t balme a motor for lax maintenance.
