Chris,
I think the only way to tell for sure is to take the valve out and see if
it holds a vacuum. However, when I had a bad bypass valve I noticed the revs
would drop really fast when you let off the gas to shift, especially the 1-2
shift when the car was cold. It would also be kind of dead when I got back on
the gas in 2nd gear. A faint "psh" sound while shifting would be a sign of a
properly functioning BPV.
