[s-cars] What To Do About Coolant

This might be a real bone-head question, but my
coolant level light/animation has been coming on just
about every time i try to accelerate hard in my S6. I
checked the level and it was indeed below the line on
the reservoir. I have never dealt with coolant issues
before, especially not on an Audi, and need someone to
point me in the right direction. Is low coolant, even
in the freezing cold winters of Indiana, a big
problem? She has been running fine lately even with
the low coolant level but I am about to make a nonstop
drive home to NY in a few days and we can't have any
break downs during the 13 hour drive. If it needs to
be filimmediatelytely, does it have to be done by an
Audi mechanic or can i just buy some at Autozone and
fill it myself? Thanks for any help.
