[s-cars] OBD II?

It has to do with the car's on-board engine diagnostics. That's really it,
but to do this, basically the entire car has to be re-programmed.

All the original Audi S4/S6's sold in the US were OBDI compliant, but all
that means is it had it's own self diagnostic software. OBDII was very
standardized type of diagnosic code that all "standard" OBDII diagnostic
equipment can understand, no matter what the car is. For other Audis,
reprograming them wasn't a big deal, but considering the extremely low
production and US sales numbers of the S4/S6 series cars, it just didn't
make sense for Audi to do it, which is why '95.5 is the last year they were
sold in the US, while the same chassis A6 contunued through early 1998.

That is really impressive to hear about those changes Audi made on the S6
for 1997 in Canada. I'm supprised they went to OBDII, but maybe it went
with other changes. I also like the fact they increased the structural
integrity in the firewal/strut tower/steering rack area as this is a MAJOR
gripe area for me with these cars. It was good that they went to the length
to put in that nice upper strut stress bar, but the firewall area especially
needed more reinforcement!

I too would be VERY interested to see any photos of the improvements made to
these areas. I never really considered any custom fabrication to add more
reinforcement up there, but it might not be a bad idea if it's easily
implemented and paintable.

Thanks,
Dan
