Jim,
I've been using a product made by The Wax Shop called Super Glaze for
several years to remove tar, bugs, and general road grime. It is
kerosene based so it easily dissolve things that shouldn't be one your
paint without removing paint. I know many old timers into hot-rodding
that use pure white kerosene to wipe their cars down with; they even
pour it into the water they used to wash their cars. I've used the
Super Glaze on my show cars for probably 15 years now without any paint
deterioration (on cars clearcoat and cars without). It's interesting to
use because unlike other waxes, it never really dries - just hazes until
you buff it. This makes buffing really easy and doesn't leave the
streak marks common with dried wax. After I'm done, I'll use Mothers
Pure Carnuba Wax. I end up with a great shine, no swirls, and the
finish feels softer than when I started. I can do my S6 in about 2
hours - wash, Super Glaze, and Mothers.
The Super Glaze really works great on the tar and bugs and protects the
paint while your using it and I've used it on red cars in the past.
