[s-cars] Low boost on 1995 S6 (insert swearword of your choice)

For those who were following my boost problems, the next chapter in my
story:
I got a VAG-COM, eventually got it to work (initially, it had difficulty
reading the engine module, but could read everything else) and found ... NO
FAULTS. I also saw a sustained (for 2 seconds at least) 2.1 bar indicated
on the boost meter on the dash a couple of days ago.
I now think that the reasons for my paranoia over boost were as follows:
a) I'm getting used to the acceleration - it's still impressive, but it
doesn't blow my mind like it did during the first week of ownership.
b) I expected the boost to be obvious when accelerating in 2nd gear
particularly at high revs, but the boost display has so much lag in it that
you need to be in 3rd or 4th to see the bigger numbers. Also, as someone
pointed out, the boost is reduced at higher revs - you stand most chance of
seeing the big numbers when accelerating in 4th starting at 2000rpm. The
engine is nowhere near as peaky as I expected. I presumed the 20v would
give it an extended top end (like the Honda 1.6i 16v I used to have), but
the most impressive thing about this engine is the massive torque between
2000 and 4000rpm.
So, I'm happy for the moment - the only outstanding problems are a
intermittent LH front speaker and no oil temp indication.
I'm getting 30mpg (25 US mpg) on long journeys and 22mpg (18.5 US mpg) on my
usual 4 mile trips.
Paul
