I also like to use additional paste flux, in a can.

Strip, twist, dip in the flux, solder together, shrinkwrap

Oh, where do I begin... :) It is easier to show than to explain, Bill.
heat up the wires with the tip, touch it with the solder wire, see that
it wicks in uniformally. Keep the tip clean by frequently rubbing it
over the wet sponge.
