To add to the replies given...

The idea is as Igor said strip and twist wires... Don't rely on the solder
to bridge the joint, as it will more than likely be a 'cold' solder joint.
I.e. it was not hot enough to allow the solder to flow properly. These
joints will show as 'not shinny' as a properly heated joint. A cold joint
will fatigue and will fail in short order.
I will often just twist the wire together and fold them over twice onto
themselves, then tap or shrink wrap them. I can test the connection with the
pull test.
The downfall of this type of connection is that it doesn't prevent corrosion
of the conductors as solder does.
Possibly too much information on the lowly solder joint.
