Hi Elijah,
You were not the only S-car guy in Toronto those days...The wife, kid and the
200q20v avant with a Thule roof rack were on an island north of Kingston
Canada for a week. This is a 5 acre island with no running water, electricity etc
can you spell primitive. Well, as my luck will have it we leave the island at
2 pm Thursday get the car loaded and on the road by 2:30 I had a little more
than a half tank of liquid gold in the tank and figured I'd fill her up by
Oshawa right north of Toronto. Wrong..at about 4:05 my kid needs to take a leak
so we stop (4:15) at a rest stop about 50 km north of Oshawa the place was
closed due to a power outage, but as my wife was getting the info I had no clue
that this was major. I think she thought it was major problem because she looked
for signal lights at the next exit and saw none she would not usually look
for stuff like that, same story with the next one etc.. we turn on the radio and
find that the s... hit the fan and...oh crap I have 60 mile left in the tank.
We got off the 401 got the last room at a motel 6 (and I was happy too). We
had food, flashlights, drinks (even a bottle of Champagne) so we were all set
to stay. One night at a dark motel 6 is enough, so Friday am I went looking for
fuel. I had heard that there was one or two places in Whitby that had fuel so
with 60 miles worth of fuel I go out looking. After about 45 minutes I get to
an Esso station which is open but there are long lines and they bring the big
measuring stick out to check the quantity of fuel (I'm thinking bad sign). I
chat with the guy in front of me and he suggests we try a Petro Canada
(PetCan) station another 7 km out and I follow the guy and low and behold if there
wasn't a station with fuel and two rather short lines (20 cars each). My day,
vacation, week was made as I filled the tank to the top and knew I'd be able to
get home and still have a 1/2 tank to get around with in Detroit.
We made it home Friday pm and were lucky enough to have gotten our power
back, but the whole thing made me feel like I was in one of the good old Mad Max
movies :)
