Richard:  I agree about the fact that a chip will expose all the other "hidden"
problems, e.g. boost leaks, bad plugs, etc.  What I very much disagree with is
you need a tuner to sort these things out.  The car should not have these
problems before you add the chip, i.e. boost leaks should have been sorted,
plugs changed, etc. before the chip. Sounds like you thought you needed a chip
because you had less power than you wanted.  In fact, a knowledgible mechanic
(or somebody with  a boost leak "kit") should have gone through the car before
you proceeded and fixed what needed to be fixed. .  Adding a chip to a car that
isn't running 100% stock is like adding more make-up to Roseanne Barr - no
amount is going to make her Claudia Schiffer.
