I had a similar noise a couple of months ago.  A metallic clank, clank, clank that would happen usually when pulling away from a stop under moderate to heavy acceleration.  I could also get it to happen more often when starting on a hill.  It turned out to be one of the heat shields in the drive-shaft "tunnel" had dropped away from the body of the car a bit and the drive shaft was banging against it.  Of course, the drive shaft may be flexing a bit more because of a bad joint and/or bearing too.
