As if there's ever a final chapter-
Thanks again to Igor for finding this 'sucker' and Sean for posting EZ
instructions:
"Just finished replacing the pollen filter, my 1997 did not have it
installed. Bought it from the dealer for $25, the p/n is 4A1 820 367.
Replacing it is kinda a pain and it takes about 30 minutes. Here's a
link showing step by step with pictures.

Getting the wipers off is probably the hardest part, I ended up using a
combination of a large screwdriver and a small pry bar to get them
loose."

I would only add that I got the filter from vwparts.com for $19.47 (but
mostly cause they had the vw turbo franken fender piece that I combined my
order with.) Rod at TPC may even be cheaper??
Anyway, I opened everything up and wasn't too surprised to learn (as Igor had
too I think) that a filter was never installed. Nadda -Zip-zilch!
(From the same parts bin as the S6 door tweeters. . . I think these two
design features are from the Audi/Kurbin collection;)
NOTE that I did fine a tennis ball size worth of decayed leaves and gunk
infront of the cooling fins. So if your fresh air stinks, this is no doubt
the culprit. It took a long slim vacuum sucker (tube ) to suck it all out.
Another 30 minute job that took an hour.
So, if you havent done this, go do it! Really...and clean up things while
youre in there;)
cheers'
Bill m
