One more point to add...
Thorough inspection/cleaning is a must, good call Bob. I would also
recommend new bearings and races that both (if similar to VW) of those
shafts ride in.
I've rebuilt a couple tranny's myself, and one point to ponder is this: What
made the ring and pinion go bad in the first place? If there's too much
play in there, than your new parts may fail somewhere down the road also.
A good tranny shop should check all of these things out...
Just my .02,
