Serge,
Thanks for your recommendations. Both outer CV boots were replaced and the
joints re-greased a couple of years back. I already checked and the boots
appear okay inside and out. It's difficult to describe the noise -- one could
call it a hum but it only comes at a certain point in the wheels rotation. It
sounds to me like a rough spot somewhere on a bearing face -- I just don't
know if it's the CV joint or the wheel bearing. I assume the left and right
half shafts are identical so I may swap the left and right sides to see if the
noise follows the half shaft.

Russ

My experience with wheel bearings leads me to believe that this is not a
wheel bearing problem. A wheel bearing noise is usually more of a humming
noise that gets louder as you put load on the offending bearing. At highway
speed, making a left had sweeping turn would load the right side. If a deep
humming noise appeared I would suspect the right wheel bearing. The humming
is of low frequency, so it is helpful to try sweeping turns in both
directions too see when the noise gets worse.

Your description is more of a rumbling, which I associate with a CV joint.
Get under there and see if the left outer boot is torn, also look for grease
splatter on the inside of the wheel. Check the inner one as well. I guess
its possible for the grease to just dry out, but usually the boot rips, the
grease splatters....

S-Listers,

My 95.5 S6 with 114K miles is making a repetitive rumbling noise from
the left front. It is most apparent at 35 MPH while making a gentle
left turn. The noise either is gone or masked at higher road speeds and
while steering straight or to the right. There is less noise as the
wheels are turned more so I think it is not the CV joint but a wheel
bearing with a rough spot. What does anyone else think??

Thanks for any advice!
