As a very short summary, clay is much more aggressive than a "cleanser"
as you say,
removes much more paint that way.
Rubbing compound is not for use on most modern enamel paints.

Subject: RE: [s-cars] silver paint - claying question
Is using a clay bar more aggressive than a paintwork cleanser, or, for
that matter, more or less aggressive than using a fine cut compound?
What products become *not* clearcoat safe? methinks a rubbing compound
could easily remove a clearcoat.
