Feico - I know that in some stroked crankshaft applications, a crank
builder will lay down a bead of weld on the piston journal surfaces to
raise (well, in the crankshaft I guess it would be "offset") the
material the requisite distance, then re-polish, or in the case of the
cam, grind the new profile.
I don't know if that's what Trevor's acquaintance is suggesting for the
AAN cam. Maybe there is some other way of doing this as well. I think
if this were done to a cam, there would also be some kind of
re-tempering or other conditioning done to the cam surfaces as well.
FWIW, as I recall, Trevor also mentioned straightening the cam(s). I
watched this done to a pair that I had. Pretty amazing how "easy" it
can be for improperly stored cams to go out of alignment. Sounds like
from his comments w/regard to the lobe surfaces, a good machinist might
also find fault with the quality of the factory surface preparations.
