I understand the reasons for the booming noise, hence my exup idea. 

For those not familiar with exup, it's the exhaust x-over technology
used by Yamaha and others on their 1000cc inline 4 motorcycles.
Basically a y-valve which switches exhaust sections in or out under
computer control. Ferrari uses a similar system on some of their cars.
The exup system should be found in many motorcycle wrecking yards
across the country.

A couple of these valves could be used to change the effective
diameter of the exhaust system based on engine RPM and/or load. It may
even be beneficial in the wastegate loop - dunno. Might be worth some
experimentation.
