[s-cars] Suspension advice

Hi all,
I have a 94 S4 which at the moment is totally stock as far as I know.
I need a new LF shock. This seems like an ideal time to
upgrade the suspension, but I'm not sure what upgrades are available and
whether they are suitable for my purposes.
This car is my daily driver, and sees a lot of less than perfect Boston-area
roads. I don't want to compromise its ability to safely navigate e.g.
the trolley track hump which I cross multiple times each day. And I probably
don't want a racecar-stiff suspension that amplifies every road imperfection.
But I wouldn't mind if it was a bit stiffer, or a bit lower, if it's feasable.
What sorts of configurations have people tried with the UrS4?
Is there a setup which lowers the car somewhat, but doesn't scrape going over
speed bumps and the like?
What if I just wanted to change the shocks and leave the stock springs?
Total waste of time?
Thanks for any advice, experiences, etc.
-Kevin
