Au contraire, it's a useful piece, even with the PITA when changing oil. I
left it of for a couple of weeks on my old Coupe quattro, and had to repair
the A/C condenser as a result of its absence. The shield deflects rocks, at
least. It also, on the S4/6, directs air to the intercooler. Air, and not
road debris. I'd get a replacement, and install it. Some have trouble
getting theirs off and putting it back on, but with a bit of practice, I've
found I can move mine either way in only a few minutes. HTH.

Yes, the belly pan contributes somewhat to all those things, however, it is
not real serious that it is missing, but I would replace it if I was you.
What has likely happened is that some place doing the oil changes didn't put
it back on.  It's a bit of a PITA everytime you do an oil change.  Lube
joints often charge an extra $20 to remove it and put it back. Price at the
dealer for the belly pan should be around $100 IIRC.  Some people have
installed a Fumoto valve to make changing oil easier. Check their website,

I recently purchased a 93 S4 and noticed there is a missing "shield" beneath
the front of the car.  I'm wondering what this is for.  Is it for
aerodynamics, cooling, protection, or what?
