[s-cars] Airbag MIL - VAG says 0588 - Airbag Igniter Resistance too large

All:

I would like to have an operational airbag.  I do not like that red MIL
glaring at me.  I cleared the code and it reappeared in two days.  The two
things to check (exclusive of replacing components) according to Bentley are
1) Repair open circuit in wiring, and 2) Check airbag spiral spring.  With
resistance too high, it sounds like I might just need some contact cleaner -
I hope.

Question(s):

1. Where is the most likely place to find an open circuit?  Are all the
connectors right there in the dash or...?
2. What is meant by "check" the spiral spring?  I know how to get to it but
what should I look for when "checking".  Is the spiral spring kind of like a
contact plate that may have some corrosion?
