[s-cars] Fuel pump BTDT?

I't looks like I'm going to be replacing the fuel pump on my
S4 because the fuel pump relay clicks on, but the pump won't run.
If I remember right, there's some type of locking ring that needs
to be removed. Does this really need a special tool, or has any
one been successful with a hammer/drift, channelocks, etc.?
Any BTDT would be very much appreciated.
Please reply to the list since I'm not posting this from my
