Right -- it's the passenger side button. As Paul discovered (with a little prompting and prodding), the connector to the backup light switch is a little finicky about cleanliness. For
the archival record, the switch sticks out of the passenger side of the tranny and, from time to time, the connector likes to be cleaned (I use spray electric motor cleaner). Symptoms
of dirty connector are the passenger side mirror won't dip and the backup lights aren't functioning.
