Greg,
I have spliced a new coil in on Stefan's Avant after one of the coils had shorted
to ground. I did not bother to reroute the whole length of wire. Just make sure
that you use watertight crimp connectors. They are expensive at about a $1/pair
but are well worth the expense. After crimping you'll need to melt the glue inside
them with a cigarette lighter.

As a precaution I later cut all 5 of my coils and spliced individual fuses in
series. This would allow me to disable a particular injector for a particular
cylinder should its coil become shorted to ground thus avoiding the need to
flatbed the car home.
