[s-cars] Off topic - Auto trans for 95 A6

Hey all,
   I hate to post on this forum for this problem, but
I don't know where else to find such expertise!
   I was driving the 95 a6 wagon today and when I
manually shifted the transmission from 1 to 4, I
noticed that it wouldn't get out of 2nd gear even
though the indicator in the dash was on D. I didn't
see this problem before driving the vehicle. It is
pretty hot in the NE today so I don't know if that
just made the condition apparent. 
   Even when I start in drive at this point, it won't
shift out of first. Shifting was crisp when it was
working so I don't suspect fluid.

Any ideas? We'll see what happens with it when I leave
work today..
