I've never had any problems yet with Bilstein. However, I know of some
personal friends who have had issues.
I think a similar seal failure occurred to my old 5ktq due to freezing
water- one of the shocks stopped working and became fixed in the
extended position, had to be replaced, I don't know what caused the
failure, but it sounds similar.
A friend's '88 A2 Jetta 16v had issues with Bilstein sports- two sets
of front shocks failed on that car, no idea why. Had Neuspeed lowering
springs installed. Shocks were replaced under warranty via shox.com.
A friend of a friend had repeated issues with Bilstein sports in his
A3 Jetta VR6, no idea why they kept blowing out- every 10k miles or
so- that's bad.
No issues at all with the Bilstein sports in the 200q, none with the
NB, none with the A4 (H&R coilovers- shocks built by Bilstein, I
think).
I'll probably not get Bilsteins for the STi primarily because there
are a lot of interesting coilover setups and the PSS-9 is not the most
competitively priced for its features.
