[s-cars] 6-speed problems - replacement from Ur-S4/S6 4.2 into Ur-S4 2.2?

Hi,
first of all, I live in Europe, this is why I'm talking about Ur-S4 with V8 
and 6-speed transmission. ;)

1. A friend of mine drives a '92 S4 6-speed. His transmission is probably on 
it's way out. Suddenly 1st and 2nd gear disappeared, it was impossible to 
shift into them. Reverse and 3rd thru 6th worked just fine. After trying to 
make it work again, we managed to get it into 1st and 2nd again, but the 
shifter feel is very hard and notchy into and out of those gears, just like 
something does not slide correct inside the transmission. In addition, there 
is "reverse-like" noise in 1st gear. The linkage is examined and looks ok, 
oil level too. We're both thinking that something inside the transmission is 
broken.. Any BTDT or tips?

2. Getting a replacement is not that hard, but we have found three 6-speed 
transmissions. Two out of Ur-S4 cars (code CBL), that will be the "old" 1st 
gear.. One out of a '96 S6 4.2 V8, (code CMG), which has got a "better" 1st 
gear. Will a transmission from a V8 engine fit the 2.2T without any 
modifications? The part number on the bellhousing is different. I know the 
ratios are slightly different too, but the final drive ratio is the same.. 
In addition, the transmission from the V8 car has got an oil pump and 
cooler, but that will not be a problem either..
