James,  Your technique will work if the end clip oi the end of the cable 
has not come off.  If it has then all that will happen with your coast 
hanger wire is to pull the cable completely loose from the 
lever.  The  coat hanger trick is worth trying, though.  If it works you're 
ahead of the game.
