Harold,

First tell tale sign is if your carpet on the passenger's side has 
been sliced to allow easy access to the ECU. Of course that doesn't
guarantee that if your car was chipped that it isn't stock now.

Pulling the ECU isn't hard, here is a write up on how to remove the
ECU:

If you don't have a socketed ECU then you don't have a modded one.
