That's a bit too frequent.  Usually you check them every 25k-30k miles,
at least for VW/Audi engines.  And if you need to change one, I don't
know what the 4V/cyl VAG setups are like, but on the 2V/cyl engines the
cams don't get removed.  There is a simple tool that is inserted to
compress the valve spring allowing you to grab the shim with a special
set of pliers and remove it.  It's actually a very simple job.  On my
old solid lifter head Sciroccos I don't think I had to change more than
2 or 3 shims over the course of 250k miles.
