Most of my education is in Materials engineering. I work at a materials
research company. I design high pressure, high temperature pressure
vessels. I have worked as a race car fabricator and with many
fabricators for about...15years now.
out of......stainless steels, as well as inconel alloys. Incidentaly
Inconel refers to alloys that are high nickel and where at one point in
time manufactured by Inco. Today they are no longer manufactured by
Inco, instead a company called special metals makes the line that inco
made. So saying inconel is kinda like saying cleanex, you know what it
is generally but not specifically. To know what you are really looking
at you need to know the alloy. For headers we typically see inconel 625
and even this doesn't really mean much if you want to look for it
generically. If you want to look for it generically you need to know
the UNS number or the NACE number or the ASTM number or the AMS number.
Typically generic number i.e. 625 is the last few numbers of the uns
number.

Just my opinion, & I'm certainly no materials engineer, but generally
stainless (I'll concede it does come in different flavors, and most
importantly, different wall thicknesses) isn't the best choice for very
high
heat applications.... like a turbo. Turbo temps are often likely to far
exceed what the naturally aspirated header folks (unless they are using
some
exotic fuels) ever, ever see, and from what I gather as a layman most
forms
of commonly available stainless tubing and "L's" will actually
chemically
alter with use over time, tending to become brittle etc. As Hap's
indicated
you're probably better off with some form of mild steel, ..... unless of
course your either a metallurgist, or Daddy Warbucks and have access to
inconel "L's" or casting facilities etc. My 2 cents
I've no idea what the 034efi guys are using for materials, so don't read
the
above as any kind of comment, one way or another, on their EM offering.
