When I bought my system 3-4 years ago, the major chains had
complete low-end systems for about $500.  I was walking by a
Cambridge Soundworks store, and knew they were high-end, but
thought what-the-heck. The sales guy asked, "Can I help you?"
And I said, "Do you have anything for about $500?"

He showed me a basic system for $600. The beauty of it was,
I could listen to the systems in a quiet room. He let me hear
the low-end, the high-end, and whatever I wanted in between.
I ended up upgrading to an Onkyo receiver and better speakers.
Cost about $750, plus another $100 for a DVD player on sale.

So, I'd recommend going to a shop that lets you listen to
the equipment in a quiet room. Then make your choices. For
$1500, you should have lots of choices.
