Keith,
A bad water temp sensor can exhibit the symptoms you are experiencing.
They cost only $7.62 from SJM Auto, why not replace it?

Also, you may want to check your MAF. Last month I had a high boost
misfire, coupled with a rough idle that would not go away when I
borrowed two known good POSs and 5 known good coils. I swapped in a
friend's good MAF, and my car was a beast again. The car had been
running rich enough to make a stink, just ask Paul K and Jim P. as
they commented on my stinky car just before I left //S Fest '05 (my
sinus' was clogged, head cold, I couldn't smell it).
Also, if you decide to try a good MAF, reset your ECU. I didn't do
this and my car ran like hell for the 15 minutes of driving. I suspect
that the fuel trim form the old MAF in the ECU wasn't agreeing with
the good MAF.
HTH.
