I am ordering some sealing cord for the taillight  center section.   
Part #  AKD 497 010 04R10 which is a box of 4 rolls, each section 2.5  
m long X 10 mm
diameter, for a total length of 10 m.  It remains permanently pliable  
as you will find when removing old taillight center sections.  They  
don't give up
easily, but the cord is not really reusable after 10 to 15 years  
picking up dirt on the exposed edges.

If anyone is interested in a roll for their new euro taillights, or  
for replacing a damaged US version, contact me off list.   It will  
cost about $12 a roll shipped,
or maybe $15 for 1 1/3 rolls to have enough to seal the light  
sections and cushion and seal the center section.  You can stretch it  
some but that will reduce
the cushioning effect of the sealant.  The corners have gaskets and  
require no other sealant.
