Lee and others,

I am very sorry to hear about your brother in law. A tough situation, not
matter how you look at it. I do however want to relate a story to you.

When I was in my early teens, I read just about every WWII fighter pilot
book I could get my hands on. One of the many books I read was Reach for
the Sky: The Story of Douglas Bader, Legless Ace of the Battle of Britain by
Paul Brickhill. In short, RAF pilot Bader, lost both of his legs after a
crash. While he was obviously out of comission for awhile, he was
determined to fly again. Not only did he fly, but he discovered that his
missing legs provided an advantage. Attempts to manuver too tightly in a
WWII fighter, caused a pilot's blood to move to other parts of his body,
particularly his legs, which caused a loss of blood to the brain, which in
turn caused the pilot to become dis-oriented or even out for a bit. Bader's
blood stopped at his knees and as a result he out-manuver his opposition.
Bader went on to come an ace. Your brother in law may be able to fly again!
