[s-cars] High coolant pressure and heater valve

That's good news. I was afraid a simple repair was hiding a mech's nightmare
as it happens way too often on my car. I already used the cap off tip when
my coolant tank was leaking but the dealer is 20 min. on highway from my
home and IIRC, the coolant was heavily boiling when I arrived at the dealer.
Not sure the coolant and the engine like that.
BTW, your description of the HVAC sensor position made me think it may not
be the heater valve after all. The family album is not very clear on this
area. From what I recall (too cold a night to check), what broke is
T-shaped, black with a blue top, sitting between the engine and the
firewall, may be 6-8 inches below the valve cover top. As the HVAC sensor
has a blue connector and seems to be lower than the heater valve it may be
the sensor in my case too.
Vincent.

Vincent,
I suspect that even a normal cooling system pressure (somewhere around 15
PSI) is enough to pop the hose off once the part with the barb has broken
off.
The pastic fittings Audi used in the cooling system sure don't seem to hold
up. I had the plastic "T" fitting that holds the climate control coolant
temperature sensor (in the heater hose between the rear of the engine and
the firewall) break just like your heater valve.
I tried a temporary fix like yours, but it came apart right away. Probably
doesn't help that the coolant is so slippery, but without some kind of barb
there really isn't much to keep the hose from being forced off even under
moderate pressure.

P.S. You could drive with the coolant reservoir cap off so there is *no*
pressure in the system... however, that could lead to overheating (or at
least boiling of coolant after shutdown.)
