Steve-
While I do not have any pops or crackles when turning off the radio, I did
experience a sound more like a soft "thud" when turning on my radio in my
old 200. I had an a/d/s amp that lacked a soft turn-on, so it made a noise
when powered up- a result of the preamp being powered up (the headunit)
before the power amp (because the remote turn-on lead from the headunit
activated the amp, not the ignition).
Because the factory amps do not exhibit this kind of behavior, I think you
have some sort of electronics failure that's causing the noise. I would get
it inspected soon rather than later and refrain from using the stereo until
then- you don't want to have a big failure and a fire or anything like that.
