Sounds like the problems the V8 people have/had with their Boses.
IIRC, the capacitors in the amplifiers degrade over time, causing
the popping.  On the V8s, acid leaks would cause fires, so some
of them were recalled.

I'd put my money on your speaker amplifiers dying a noisy death.
