Yes, you need a helmet, and it needs to be at a certain safety standard
(Snell 2000, etc.). Check with the event organizers. It is more worthwhile
as a rookie than at any other level. You should not waste a set of tires as
a rookie.....if you drive well and inflate properly. Insurance is a big grey
area...every state, company, and scenario is different. But in many cases,
companies exclude timed events and competition, and not schools. Call ahead
to ask. You will have more fun and learn more with a true manual
transmission in my opinion. Have fun!
