Dave,
I think the turbo deal is more common at altitude, and especially in chipped
cars at altitude. As far as the 2nd gear goes, I am not too sure that this
is due to the overzealous teenage drivers. One of my friends, who is by no
means a bang the hell out of the car sort of driver, has just encountered
this problem at 35k miles. Even the cheap Borg Warner T-5's in the 5.0
Mustangs from the 80's could stand the worst of teenage abuse for that long;
and the tranny repair cost + clutch in the S4tt is about 1/3 the price of
that whole car :) It just smells like a design flaw to me that Audi doesn't
want to take the wrap for on the tranny. Kind of like our 1st gear whine
that reared its ugly head at 80k miles or so on some of our cars....but at
least that waited until 80k miles...usually.

gotta challenge that; we have yet to replace a 2.7 T turbo because it failed
prematurely. We've had many, many. Audi does occasionally sell a car to a
"fragile" owner who doesn't have the savvy the change the oil in a timely
manner.
However, we have seen several six speed transmissions that were weak; we
think it's largely due to aggressive shifting by youthful hot rods.
generally they bang second gear from first thus bending the shift fork
inside the gearbox. this has mostly been with S 4's that Dad bought for his
kid and the kid and his friends, of course , are anxious to see what the car
will do. But we have seen several.
