[s-cars] Anyone towing with their urS4/S6?

Thanks, Jack. It seems the biggest worry is extended periods of boost. To
complicate things, A larger turbo would give more torque and generate less
heat, but would do so at a higher RPM. Granted, the extra load would make
the turbo spool earlier. The K24 would probably be fairly ideal with it's
low boost threshhold, but it would work harder to make the same torque as a
larger unit. The occasional blast up a hill might be ok, but I'd hate to be
constantly under boost while cruising at 70MPH on a level highway. It seems
the hitch mfg's offer a class 2 hitch for the 100, but specifically state
it's not for the turbo cars. I'd hate to spend the $$$ for something that
might not work, but I have enough scrap steel in the garage to give it a go
without investing much. Add another item to the winter project list.....

I tow a few snowmobiles with my 92. I think the whole package is 2000 lbs
tops.
It seems ok for 75 miles at a time, in the winter, but I would not want to
tow 2000 lbs throught the desert uphill!.
I usually use my dad's grand cherokee most of the time since the ground
clearance an towing ability is much better.
The 5.4 V* does a job on gas though, 14-15 mpg!

I don't think the S4 would do very well in stock form. I think attention to
the brakes, cooling system, power output, and suspension could make it
doable. You're right, that's a lot of load on a relatively small engine. I
have plans to take a good amount of weight out of the trailer, and get the
package closer to 2000 lbs. It'd be interesting to see what king of mileage
I'd get.
I'll probably give it a shot and see how it feels. I'd really rather not
get something truck based. Gas went up 26 cents today. It really sucks
that's normal these days.

Mark-
I would not tow with a S4 something that big. You're talking about a gas
turbo car
that's not meant to be under full load all the time. If you were talking
about
a turbodiesel truck, that's a whole different story.
You really do need a full-size SUV or pickup truck to tow well- literally
everyone I know
who tows cars eventually ends up with a full-size pickup.
Chipped? No way- you're putting the engine under heavy load with the
envelope already
pushed.
