last week, i completed the installation of the GT2871 hybrid turbo that i
got from 034motorsport. i've been driving the car for about a week now,
waiting to see if anything would break. so far, nothing has, so i think
it's safe to assume it works. i was surprised when i fired up the car
and nothing exploded or leaked. usually there's some niggling issues.
it was much more work than i expected, primarily because of the oil and
coolant lines. clearance is pretty tight and there isn't a lot of room
to route the lines. almost every step of the process presented issues.
definitely not a drop-in, but i should know that by now. it would have
helped a lot to have written instructions for the install, but i didn't
get any with the kit. if anybody wants, i can run through some of the
issues i ran into during the installation. i could do it much faster
next time around.
special thanks to dave dawson, who patiently answered my many questions
and offered advice and encouragement when i was ready to give up and throw
a grenade in the car.
the difference is noticeable at 5000+ rpm, where the stock turbo used
to fall off quickly. the GT2871 keeps pulling well past that. it seems
to be falling slightly at 6500 rpm. it may be my imagination, but the
car seems to be faster than before at the same boost level as stock.
more efficient turbo = less heat in intake charge = more timing advance?
there's one problem, though. the digital boost gauge (I have a '92)
isn't going as high as it used to. peak boost seems to be lower than
with the stock turbo, and i haven't figured out why yet.
the 2bennett hose places the nipple for the WGFV on the front instead
of on the side like the stock hose did. however, this means if i try
to plug the WGFV into the nipple, it interferes with the plastic intake
snorkel. right now, i have a 90 degree plastic nipple and a piece of
hose to connect to the WGFV. the WGFV is sitting below the intake hose
and held in place with a zip-tie to the hose. i wonder if this
configuration is the cause of my low boost.
what do people do about installing the WGFV with the 2bennett hose if
they still have the intake snorkel?
