Agreed a bit more awkward but not bad at all.  The only reason to remove 
the shaft is for the removal of the CV from the half shaft.  That is 
easily done with the method described right on the car.

BTW, I have the special pliers needed for the boot clamps.  I'll rent it 
cheap (the cost of shipping it to you).
