Gotta keep the A1 confessions thread going.
For me it started in '88 with a a ride in a friend's 78 Callaway turboed
rabbit. We hit 21 psi on the gauge before a clamp on the intake plumbing
gave way... Whooooaaaa.... What a rush... from a 1600cc four banger!!! That
car's engine expired less than a year later.
Soon I had a 79 rabbit, sold it for more than I paid ($125, no clutch).
Upgraded to an 83 silver GTI, after discovering the benefit of a
big-ring-gear-close-ratio transmission. Later found a low mileage black one
that had the Neuspeed throttle body. All the usual mods followed, Autotek
anti-roll bars, springs, Tokico adjustable shocks, g-grind cam, Tri-Y
header, Techtonics Tuninf stainless exhaust, 10" brakes from the 16v, 16v
clutch, rear shock tower tie bar, front srtut tie bar, lower 4-point bars,
schrick aluminum finned oil pan (made the thing run like a half degree
cooler, really)...
Car was a blast, probably made a whopping 100hp with all the mods, but it
weighed nothing, handled like on rails, spinning tires mid-turn could not
shake this thing. Handbrake madness without provocation, on any surface, but
the slightest moisture, light dusting of sand, even a splash of
gravel...fogetaboutit...
Wish I still had that car. Now on my third S6 Avant, the madness continues.
