i bought an HID kit for $185 delivered (the same GB that was mentioned
on this list some time ago), and installation was a snap.

i'm happy with the results and wish i'd done it years ago.  the beam
pattern is perhaps not quite as sharp as from my B5 S4, but it's only
noticeable when i pull up to within a few feet of the garage door.
i've also seen my car coming at me with its lights on, and i don't
notice any objectionable light scattering.  people don't flash their
lights at me, either.

not as nice as your solution, lee, but cheaper and a lot less work.
